A Complete Warehouse to Cold Storage Conversion

A case study on how HOS BV provided a complete solution to transform a warehouse into two low-temperature freezing storage rooms in Shercock, Ireland.

XXX

Challenge:

A chiller for a 1000m2 fish cold storage facility

C&M Coldstores is a 3PL Logistics Services provider specializing in cold storage, freezing storage, and blast freezing of food. C&M Coldstores also provides food manufacturing services.

As an expansion to their existing facilities, they acquired a warehouse 104 x 60 x 15 meters, that belonged to a company called Celtic Pure Water, located in Shercock, Ireland.

The challenge was to convert this space into two low-temperature freezing storage rooms with the dimensions of 52 x 60 x 14,5 meters. As many as 16.000 pallets can be stored in the freezing storage rooms, mostly for customers Unilever and McCain.

Solution:

When Cooling is Combined With Heat Recovery

HOS BV supplied a Howden compressor plant, consisting of 3 Howden XRV compressors with a capacity of approx. 300 kW each at -30 °C evaporation temperature. Two of the compressors are running the cold stores, with the third as a backup. An evaporating condenser and 9 Guntner evaporators were supplied by HOS BV as well as 3 Q-plate heat exchangers, serving for underfloor heating.

For the loading area, HOS BV supplied a cooling solution in the form of an air-cooled Trane EXCAN 700 chiller with approx. 200 kW cooling capacity and Glycol evaporators.

Result

The Most Energy-Efficient Cold Storage and Heat-Recovery Installation in the History of C&M Coldstores

Mr. G. Copas, owner of the Brontech company, and installer of refrigeration solutions, did the sourcing of the equipment at HOS BV and built the complete installation for C&M Coldstores. The solution was engineered by HOS BV’s Marcel Hazeu in close cooperation with Mr. G. Copas.

The compressors were fully overhauled and all other equipment was fully tested electrically and mechanically and delivered in 100% running condition. The installation was completed in the summer of 2021 and has been running productively and effectively ever since.

Brontech has since done a second project for C&M Coldstores in Carrickmacross, Ireland. A third project for cold storage of dairy products is currently being debated.

It is always a pleasure dealing with HOS BV. Based on the information you provide to them they always engineer a good and fitting solution and the help is always very professional, friendly and customer-oriented. The quality of equipment delivered is excellent and it is easy to see that a sense of pride goes into providing used equipment so it has a proper second life for many more years. In short, I will continue to work with HOS BV for all opportunities where our customers are open to the idea of purchasing used refrigeration equipment
